0.53-Carat Oval Tsavorite Garnet
0.53-Carat Oval Tsavorite Garnet
Originally found in 1967 by British geologist, Campbell Bridges, tsavorites were first discovered in Tanzania, much to the upset of the Tanzanian government who tried to hinder the excavation by not granting permits to look for the stones; it wasn't until Bridges pushed harder and was granted the ability to mine them years later with his son up until they were killed due to local mob unrest. Before his untimely demise, Bridges was able to spread the word of tsavorites and begin selling them as mineral specimens. It wasn't until Tiffany Co came in and spread the word of these jewelry level stones that they were finally named in honor of the tsavo river and national game reserve in Tanzania.
Tsavorites, also commonly known as tsavolites have since been found int Kenya, Madagascar, Pakistan and even in Antarctica as those are the only place capable of folding and refolding the minerals necessary to create them. Due to the arduous process, it is also incredibly difficult to find a clean stone above one carat, leaving it as one of the more expensive garnets.
