The variety of garnets colloquially known as mahenges were originally discovered by miners searching for sapphires in Tanzania then discarded and even spitefully named after the Swahili word for outcast, Malaya or sometimes Malaia, has now become one of the rarest garnet types in the world. Unlike other garnets it is limited to just a few, mostly depleted, mines; but only after it became popular in the United States.

Known for its hues ranging from almost colorless light pink to darker reds, while also occasionally containing yellows, oranges and even browns, it has become very sought after for both cut and uncut variants. Found in Umba valley Kenya and Tanzania which is a common birthing ground for many other precious and semi-precious stones. Gemstone quality stones reaching 3-5 carats are craved by not only jewelry enthusiasts but also gemstone collectors.
